Joan La Barbara (born June 8, 1947 in Philadelphia, PA) is a vocalizer & composer associated with contemporary music. She occurs as previous student of Helen Boatwright. She has worked using composers John Cage, her husband since 1979 Morton Subotnick, Philip Glass, Merce Cunningham, Larry Austin, and several others. She has likewise worked using Kenneth Goldsmith.

When she is known primarily for her vocal abilities & extended techniques, she is also an accomplished & respected composer. Her albums include: Voice Is the Original Instrument: Early Works (1976/2003). Magic 2266/Lovely Music 3003. Healthy Paintings
